Yellow Fever

Yellow fever is a virus transmitted to people through the bite of infected mosquitoes. It is a vaccine-preventable disease.

Yellow fever is now very rare in the United States but still occurs in tropical regions of Africa and in some parts of South America. Travelers may be at risk of yellow fever. Illness can range from mild fever to severe hepatitis and hemorrhagic fever. It can be fatal. Care is based on symptoms.

Steps to prevent yellow fever include vaccination against the virus, and avoiding mosquito bites by using repellent, mosquito nets and protective clothing.
